TAKING IT TO THE TRAILS: KATELYN’S STORY

While we know Team Fusion is talented, sometimes—they really surprise us. In celebration of Earth Month, we’re highlighting Katelyn, a stylist at our Sandestin location, who completed the 2,000 mile Appalachian Trail last October with her father, Greg. She learned more than just navigating—rather, a more Zen approach to life, and a newfound way of ease.

KATELYN’S STORY

Katelyn’s father had this nearly lifelong dream of hiking the Appalachian National Scenic Trail with his son, but after taking a glimpse at the trail map, Katelyn quickly took interest. She thought, “Why couldn’t I do it?” And she did.

What makes this story so special is the time spent with her father—he had been gone nearly all her life, for about 4 years total, because of his Air Force deployments.

After 6 months of living back at home to train, the headstrong duo began their journey on March 2, 2017 near Atlanta—with challenges, ankle injuries and the built-up endurance in tow. On October 1, 2017, they finished the trail in Maine together, but the memories and lessons learned will never go away.

LESSON LEARNED: SELF-CARE STARTS WITH YOU

On her trails, Katelyn took away a more Zen approach to life, and to take life a little less seriously, especially when it comes to the everyday issues. For her father Greg, it was more about a change in perspective on materialism. As they became more accustomed to life with so little, a more minimalistic lifestyle seemed all the more appealing.

No matter what they’ve taken from their hikes, it all boils down to listening to your mind and body—and time in nature will help you do just that. Like Katelyn and her dad, they’ve learned a little more about taking things easy and reducing their waste—both great examples of self-care and self-awareness. Take some time out of your day to go for a walk, and listen to what your body is telling you to do—no matter if it’s cleaning out your closet or de-stressing, self-care starts with the power within you.

CELEBRATE EARTH MONTH WITH US

Katelyn’s story has inspired us this Earth Month—and we’re taking notes. We’re celebrating all of April (and beyond) knee-deep in nature—so bring on the nature trails, beach walks and biking hotspots for some much needed self-awareness. You don’t have to hike a treacherous trail to achieve this (although we think you’re amazing if you do!), either. Start with evenings out in your backyard—admiring the beautiful flowers blooming or the smell of freshly-cut grass. Don’t take our word for it—studies say spending time outside can alleviate stress, get vitamin D, help with sleeping and make you happier.

Katelyn says for a low maintenance, easy look, Texture Tonic is her go-to. It gives her more texture for braids, and enhances her natural waves. To style, she sprays Texture Tonic in wet hair, sleeps on it, then sprays more the next morning for her signature effortless look.

Another favorite? Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair. In our sunny climate (and in those she travels to), the sun can take a toll on her hair—and this product is her end-all-be-all to damage-free locks.
